Catherine Smith


I am currently a graduate student working on my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Instructional Technology at North Carolina State University.  I am additionally working on obtaining my ESL license from North Carolina State University.  I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, with a concentration in Math.  I also have a Spanish minor.   I have had much experience with children of all ages, and I thoroughly enjoy teaching.  I have also had experiences studying abroad and interacting with various other cultures.  I have a passion for working with Spanish speaking students and helping them find new and innovative ways to learn.

Graduate School Projects and Experience:August 2010 – Present

  • Created a website that featured healthy lifestyles
  • Designed a website on the human body which incorporated blogs and other interactive features
  • Collaborated with a team to create a comprehensive unit on plants online
  • Integrated podcasts, blogs, wikis, movies/videos, Microsoft PowerPoints, etc. into lessons, websites, and other educational activities
  • Utilized and explored new and innovative instructional tools such as Viddler, Gliffy, Glogster, Wordle, Quizlet, Voki, VoiceThread, C-map, Twitter, Prezi, FlipCamera, etc.

Student Teaching Experience:Grade 3, 23 students January – April 2010

Briarcliff Elementary School, Cary, NC

  • Taught a Science unit on soils and created a relevant project with a rubric.
  • Incorporated white boards, clocks, rulers, calendars, and various other manipulatives in math lessons.
  • Created and taught an integrated Science unit on the human body which promoted interactive and hands-on experiences.
  • Implemented a fairytales unit where students had to write a fairytale from a different point of view using story maps and other graphic organizers.
  • Developed a station involving the human body for Math and Science night at Briarcliff Elementary.
  • Designed science and math integrated centers as well as reading and writing centers to be used during reading time.
  • Participated in parent teacher conferences and IEP meetings.
  • Instructed students on how to write friendly letters, and how to address envelopes.Students addressed and mailed their own letters.
  • Collaboratively worked with a team of 3rd grade teachers to design reading lessons and units.
  • Taught students on the Smart Board about various multiplication games they could play on the internet.

Junior Field Experience:Grade 4, 25 studentsJanuary – May 2009

Fuller Elementary School, Raleigh, NC

  • Devised a lesson about different versions of Cinderella and then had students use a FlipCam to create their own version of Cinderella.
  • Educated students about the governor’s position and had students, in small groups, create a poster showing the jobs of the governor.
  • Taught a lesson on modern day pirates to the students, and had students build a “pirate ship” on their own, to see which ship could hold the most weight.
  • Observed students participating in a Socratic seminar on the book “Under the Black Flag.”

  • Developed and taught math lessons involving equipartitioning.
  • Taught students how to read a recipe and led a small group to make trail mix using a recipe.
