The group gathered to discuss their collective belief that the city’s welfare issues needed to be addressed with cooperative action. The result of their work was $21,700 in funds raised and the creation of a nationwide movement that exists 125 years later. Today, loyal volunteers and contributors support the United Way.The United Way has grown into an organization focused on improving education, health, and the financial security of families. One of the organization’s initiatives is a 10-year campaign to reduce the number of high school dropouts in half. The organization aims to achieve this goal by taking a research-based approach to building strong families and communities.
