Social Work Field Practice Experience

2008: The Astra Centre

  • A Jewish sheltered employment organization. I spent six weeks here as part of my practical field work experience for my degree.

2009: Conradie Care Centre

  • Placed here for three months, working with patients who were chronically ill and in need of long-term rehabilitation.
  • Provided counselling to help patients accept their diagnosis and learn to cope, and assisted patients in their applications for disability grants.
  • Collaborated with the treatment team of clinical social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and rehabilitation counsellors to develop individualised treatment plans

2010: Westlake United Church Trust

  • Placed here for one year and worked with clients from the township nearby.
  • Cases included family counselling, drug and alcohol education and assisting community members  with their social grant applications
  • Compiled a comprehensive service directory of the organisations working in the area so that community members would be aware of the services available to them.
  • Assisted Dutch social work volunteers to integrate into the local community and set up a project with the home based carers
  • Ran a psycho-educational group for young children from traumatised backgrounds.

2011: Timour Hall Primary School

  • Placed here for 6 months and counselled many children regularly on a one-on-one basis, dealing with a variety of issues including anxiety, bereavement and divorce in the family.
  • Ran a group with Grade 4 girls that focused on reducing the bullying behaviour that was identified as a problem within this grade.

My roles as an associate manager included:

  • Providing strong leadership and managerial skills to motivate the team and support the store manager with daily tasks and responsibilities.
  • Training and developing sales associates, providing regular coaching and feedback to improve performance
  • Completing start of day procedures when opening the store, and end of day procedures when closing to ensure the store was ready at all times.

  • Promoting sales by demonstrating merchandise and products to customers
  • Maintaining inventory by checking merchandise to determine inventory levels; anticipating customer demand.

Community Experience

2003-2007: Beautiful Gate Children’s Home

Volunteered at this home that looked after children infected and affected by HIV. I helped to train and lead other volunteers. I was also involved in planning outings and activities for the children. When the children became ill and were admitted to hospital, I also spent time with them there.

2002-2005: Transkei Mission

Every June/July during the winter holidays, i travelled with a team to Sondela mission station just outside of Mthatha. We led youth outreach program's, distributed water to the local communities, and also facilitated general maintenance of the mission buildings.

2009: Son Surf club

Led a surfing outreach programme. I was responsible for organizing weekly surfing trips, camps, conferences and fund raising events. I was required to lead large groups of teenagers as well as developing one to one relationships with individuals.

2010: Cape Agulhas World Cup Soccer Social Programme

In the June and July holidays, along with a team from my church, I had the opportunity to work with children from difficult backgrounds to help them channel their energy into positive behaviours through sport.
