  • Support planning department through the development and maintenance of production models.

Significant achievements:

  • FOIL PLANT EXPANSION PROJECT
    • Responsible for process commissioning of R 500m expansion project (addition of two light gauge rolling mills).
    • Led the mill start-up and first phase commissioning allowing for the realisation of critical project milestones.
    • Selected operations team, compiled and implemented commissioning training matrix for 12 specialist operations individuals.
    • Represented process team in contractor discussions in Germany.
    • Selected for process training in the United States of America.
    • Led technology exchange program with technology partners in Japan.
  • FOIL PLANT PROCESS CONTROL IMPLEMENTATION
    • Led the departmental Controlled Processes implementation of the plant wide standardisation and improvement initiative (IMA).
    • Planned, organised and controlled the development and implementation of 12 machine centre FMEA's and Control Plans through the direct engagement and coordination of in excess of 50 plant employees (including operations, technical and quality).
    • Controlled the implementation process to meet and exceed plant implementation schedule for Controlled Processes.
  • FOIL PLANT CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
    • Led the departmental Improvement Projects leg of the plant wide standardisation and improvement initiative (IMA).
    • Currently oversee and manage the execution of 8 active projects with forecast benefit of R 30m for the 2011 year.
    • Identified and prioritised improvement initiatives, carried out first phase scoping and financial benefits analysis.
    • Compiled and maintain departmental project planning, resource allocation and progress control for improvement initiatives. 
  • MILL QUICK-CHANGEOVER PROJECT
    • Initiated and led project to reduce mill coil-to-coil delays by 50% resulting in a productivity opportunity equating to approximately R 5m per annum.
    • Project based on lean waste reduction principles.
  • MILL STRIP BREAKS SIX-SIGMA PROJECT
    • Initiated and led project to reduce the strip breaks (and associated metal / productivity / sales loss) by 70%.
    • Responsible for DMAIC phases as well as project team leadership.
    • Overall project benefit calculated to be approximately R 20m per annum.
    • To date project hs reduced strip breaks by 40% with associated forecast production benefit of R 8m per annum.
  • QUALITY INFORMATION SYSTEM
    • Led implementation of plant wide Quality Information System for the identification and recording of machine centre process deviations.
    • Project included the identification of process critical variables and coordination of specialist team in the system development and implementation phase.
  • OVERALL EQUIPMENT EFFECTIVENESS (OEE)
    • Implemented rolling plant OEE capture and reporting system.
    • OEE system captures and records machine centre availability data, quality data and productivity data for the purpose of machine centre control and improvement project initiative identification.

    • Completed University of Pretoria's Master's Degree in Engineering Management with distinction.

    • Lead project to modify existing battery servicing machines for operation on new Coke Battery. Project included electrical, mechanical and control modifications.

  • CAPITAL PROJECTS
    • Successfully identified, carried out preliminary scoping and benefits studies resulting in the successful application for R 16m in capital for improvement or status quo projects for the year.
  • COAL TIPPLER REPLACEMENT PROJECT
    • Lead project to repair foundations of existing tipplers and replace tippler structures and controls.
    • Carried out scoping of project compiled enquiry and benefits analysis and motivated for R 10m capital expenditure.

  • COAL WEIGH-FEEDER UPGRADE PROJECT
    • Project budget / expenditure - R 1.83m / R 1.79m.
    • Project Benefit - R 5.4m per annum.
    • Project completed on schedule and within budget.
    • Project replaced legacy coal feeding system on 33 coal silos (with associated conveyor system) and upgraded control system, operator interfaces and control logic / automation.
    • Managed project team consisting of instrumentation specialists, mechanical specialists, operations staff and contractors.
  • ELECTROSTATIC TAR PRECIPITATOR INSTALLATION PROJECT
    • Project budget / expenditure - R 3.2m / R 3.2m.
    • Project Benefit - R 2m per annum.
    • Project completed within schedule and budget.
    • Installed new Electrostatic Tar Precipitator (ETP) in existing gas processing plant.
    • Lead project including management of project schedule, budget and project team consisting of mechanical specialist and contractors.
  • GAS PLANT CONTROL UPGRADE PROJECT
    • Project budget / expenditure - R 4m / R 4.5m.
    • Project benefit - R 5m pa (project required to allow for realisation of return on R 500m Battery Extension Project).
    • Project completed ahead of schedule.
    • Project to upgrade existing gas plant control to cater for expansion and replace legacy equipment.
    • Lead project including management of budget, schedule,  internal and external control and instrumentation specialists and installation team.
    • Received Works Manager award for project excellence.
  • BATTERY MACHINES INSTALLATION PROJECT (Consultation)
    • Project to increase Coke Plant production capability by 33%.
    • Served as technical advisor to project Electrical Engineer.
    • Carried out control and automation system acceptance testing in China.
    • Oversaw installation and commissioning of control and automation systems and assisted in realising project ROI.
  • BATTERY MACHINES UPGRADE PROJECT
    • R 100m project to replace battery servicing machines.

  • COAL CHARGING CAR PROJECT
    • Project carried out using in-house resources and available materials.
    • Project benefit - R 240k per annum.
    • Completed within schedule and budget. 
    • Carried out electrical hardware and control software design, installation and commissioning.
  • COKE QUENCH CAR ELECTRICAL UPGRADE PROJECT
    • Project budget / expenditure - R 400k / R 380k.
    • Project benefit - R 4.6m per annum.
    • Completed project ahead of schedule and on budget with no interruptions to operations. 
    • Carried out project and contractor management, hardware and control software design, took part in hardware installation and commissioned final system.
    • Project reduced machine failures due to equipment failure from four per month on average to one failure in two months and improved the mean time to repair (MTTR) from an average of one hour to an average of fifteen minutes.
  • PULVERISED COAL INJECTION COAL SUPPLY INTERVENTION
    • Requested to assist with rapid development of pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal supply system control logic.
    • Developed control, safety interlocking, automatic sequences, emergency shutdown procedures and interface to PCI plant within a period of four days.
    • Intervention allowed for realisation of PCI (R 500m) plant project benefits on schedule.
  • Completed Engineer-in-Training program two months ahead of schedule.
