Byron Lerner has spent more than 40 years in business, but his first love has always been community sports programs. A former basketball player from New York’s Hunter College, Lerner has taken the skills he learned in the boardroom and used them in service of sports programs throughout Long Island, New York. Children in Roslyn, East Williston, and East Hills have benefited from Byron Lerner’s dedication to youth sports.A successful businessman, Byron Lerner has served on several local volunteer boards. He coached Little League for seven years and was on the Board of Directors for that organization. Byron Lerner spent 17 years on the Board of Directors for Roslyn Booster Basketball Club, Inc. (RBBC), which he also served as President from 1986 to 1993.As RBBC President, Byron Lerner provided scholarships so that local students could attend summer basketball camp in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He also organized a charity basketball game between the WFAN New York sports radio station and local coaches, and he brought the Ernie and Bernie Clinic for the Kids to the area so that local schoolchildren could learn from NBA players. Lerner’s efforts on behalf of the club helped to strengthen local basketball programs and educate children in sportsmanship and athletics.While serving on the RBBC board, Byron Lerner continued to coach youth sports. He mentored children in the RBBC league for 23 years but also coached for the Amateur Athletic Union of the USA, Inc., the Catholic Youth Organization, and the Sid Johnson Jewish Community Center. Though his days as a college basketball player are behind him, Byron Lerner continues to share his skills, his talents, and his love of the game with children in his community.

The 2012-2013 season of the Roslyn Booster Basketball Club (RBBC) is scheduled to begin in early November. Most of the club’s teams, which cater to more than 1,000 students in 1st through 12th grade, will practice in 45-minute sessions during the week and play weekend games. The 1st- and 2nd-grade teams will only hold weekend training sessions. Practice and game venues include Roslyn High School, Roslyn Middle School, East Hills School, and Wheatley High School.
