Gay Campbell is a former president of the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) and was on my interview committee for my current job with Stanwood-Camano School District. She was hired to contract with my school district for 1 year and we worked closely to research and plan a successful communications program for the school district.

Jean Shumate, Ed.D.

Dr. Shumate is my direct supervisor and we have worked closely to develop and implement the Stanwood-Camano School District's communication programs.

Gary Platt, CPA

Mr. Platt is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for Stanwood-Camano School District. He and I work closely to effectively communicate the Stanwood-Camano School District budget and operations with constituents. Together we have created election information pieces, annual reports, numerous presentations to various audiences, and many other communication strategies to keep the community informed and to collect their input.

Mrs. Hulten and I worked closely in a county-wide group of school communications professionals to plan and coordinate various information campaigns, training seminars, and other activities and materials to support reach our target audiences and promote public education. She is an expert in school public relations and has 29 years of experience.

Public Information Coordinator

Stanwood-Camano School District
  • Serves as the official school district spokesperson for all information updates and crisis communication efforts.
  • Works closely with the superintendent and school board to plan and implement district-wide proactive communication plan with programs and campaigns to build relationships with staff, parents, and the community to support student learning. Programs include:
    • Developing and maintaining information on district website, using Joomla! CMS and leading training sessions for school staff.
    • Developing and maintaining Key Communicator Network comprised of 55 influential community members engaged in two-way communication with the school district. 
    • Writing content and designing layout for all district publications and marketing materials, including website, presentations, newsletters (internal & external audiences), videos, election information, annual performance reports, and press releases.
    • Writing monthly district-wide staff e-newsletter to reach approximately 600 staff members with useful updates on district budget and other upcoming issues, helpful tips and reminders, and news from around the district.
    • Working closely with local media outlets to publish stories that are of interest to target audiences. 
    • Establishing district-level partnerships between schools and local community organizations and has initiated connections for numerous school-level partnerships.

Public Relations Intern

Franklin Pierce Schools
  • Communication and graphic design internship. Worked closely with superintendent to unify Franklin Pierce School District’s image and publications using the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Coordinated multiple assignments, including writing press releases, designing publications for numerous departmental needs, and planning events.
  • Created surveys to research internal and external public opinion regarding quarterly newsletter changes.
  • Implemented a redesign of the FPS quarterly newsletter using stimulating design concepts, writing articles, and showcasing school happenings.

Douglas County Public Utility District
  • Held multiple positions throughout three years: Customer Accounting intern, Information Systems intern, Wells Dam Accounting intern and assistant to the Public Information Officer.
  • Helped write and design a brochure to inform customers of the options available with the PUD fiber optic / broadband network. 
  • Designed two newspaper advertisements for the 2006 Douglas County PUD exhibit at the North Central Washington Fair.
  • Answered phones on the PUD switchboard, answered customer questions, took customer payments, and signed customers up for new service.

Creative Services Team Co-Chair, PLU Media Lab

  • Involved in promotion of PLU Media Lab internship program to partner skilled PLU students with local media organizations.
  • Assisted in the shooting and editing of a promotional video as well as the writing and design of brochures.

Public Relations Team Leader, PLU School of Arts & Communication Week

  • Led a team of six to create promotional materials, plan for the SOAC week community event, and coordinate professional speaker times and locations.


Web site development
As the Public Information Coordinator for Stanwood-Camano School District I assisted in the launch of a new district Web site using Joomla! content management system (CMS) in June of 2007. Since that time I developed a "map" of menu links and have been developing the site to include information that is relevant and up-to-date for our target audiences. In addition, I lead training sessions for district staff to learn how to upload materials to the site and designed supplemental user guide materials to assist them in their learning process. I also chaired the Web site Committee to update school board policies for technology and also the district's Web site guidelines and standards.   Visit Stanwood-Camano School District's Web site.
External communications efforts
As the Public Information Coordinator for Stanwood-Camano School District, I lead the efforts in district-wide external communications. I began an external community-wide newsletter which recently won an award from the Washington School Public Relations Association for "exceptional performance in promoting education," started the Key Communicator network to connect with local parents and community members, coordinate partnerships, write budget handbooks, present press releases to local media outlets, and coordinate recognition activities to promote public education in the community. Internal company communications
As the Public Information Coordinator for Stanwood-Camano School District, I plan, coordinate, and implement effective internal communications strategies to reach our 600+ staff members. The communication plan includes coordinating events, recognition efforts, partnerships, staff e-newsletters, and special updates as needed to keep staff informed and involved in every aspect of the organization. Graphic Design
I know how to use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. I use InDesign and Photoshop every couple of days in my current position and feel very comfortable with intermediate level uses.
