Brent Warr is a businessman, community leader, and the former Mayor of Gulfport, Mississippi. As the owner of Warr Properties, he purchases, develops, and obtains financing for commercial and residential real estate projects and historic restoration and redevelopment. Brent Warr also serves as President of Environmental Protection Systems, a company that works to protect and restore natural areas affected by oil spills and other disasters.Shortly after Brent Warr won his first campaign for public office to become Mayor of Gulfport in May 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast. Mr. Warr played a critical leadership role in steering Gulfport through the crisis and worked with local and state officials to map out a strategy for a stronger economy based on urban planning and investment. Prior to beginning his career in politics and industry, Brent Warr attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He studied a variety of subjects, including business, real estate, finance, and agricultural construction, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.In 2006, Brent Warr received the Urban Leadership Award from the Penn Institute for Urban Research, a University of Pennsylvania facility dedicated to an increased understanding of urban development. In 2007, he was invited to speak on a panel at the 3rd Annual Richard J. Daley Urban Forum. Brent Warr and mayors from cities around the globe spoke at a program titled "Leadership, Infrastructure, and the Urban Future." He has since been an active public speaker, discussing efforts to rebuild Gulfport after Hurricane Katrina, disaster preparedness, and the ways in which cities can plan to respond and recover in the event of a crisis.Brent Warr continues to play an active role in his community. A dedicated Christian and gospel music singer, he supports the Gulf Coast Community Ministries and makes charitable contributions to the American Heart Association. In addition to maintaining their family farm, he and his family make time to hunt, fish, listen to music, and play golf.

A former mayor, public speaker, and policy maker, Brent Warr currently serves as president and owner of Warr Properties, a real estate investment and redevelopment firm based in Gulfport, Mississippi. Throughout his career, Brent Warr has been actively involved in the protection and recovery of the environment, and he played an integral role in rebuilding the city of Gulfport following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. His efforts were recognized by the Penn Institute for Urban Research, which presented Mr. Warr with its Urban Leadership Award in 2006. The Penn Institute for Urban Research (IUR) at the University of Pennsylvania is committed to fostering a deeper understanding of our nation’s cities through civic engagement, education, and research. In order to assist policy makers in making informed decisions on a local, national, and international level, Penn IUR helps to develop knowledge in three areas: the function of anchor institutions in urban areas, innovative strategies for urban development, and how to build an inclusive, sustainable city in the 21st century.Scholars from a dozen schools and departments of the University of Pennsylvania contribute to the work of the Penn IUR, including the Schools of Dental Medicine, Education, Law, Medicine, and Social Policy and Practice, to name a few. The institute researches such matters of local interest as affordable housing and community development, as well as matters of larger scope such as environmental policy and global health.
