Researcher, tenured professor, and skilled mentor Bon Sy, Ph.D., holds two patents, with two more pending. The co-inventor of the innovative Privacy Preserving Data Exchange (PPDX), which utilizes biometrics to enable individuals to control their private data rather than storing it in an “entrusted” external database, he conducts funded research in a variety of multi-disciplinary areas. Bon Sy’s study interests include biometrics applications, robotics and security, statistical model selection techniques, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), wireless networking, and data-mining applications. His collaborative efforts have fostered better understanding in such varied disciplines as climate change, chromosome classification, and dysarthric speech evaluation. As a tenured Professor at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, Bon Sy has authored a number of significant articles, including “Secure Computation for Biometric Data Security-Application to Speaker Verification,” published in the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Systems Journal Special Issue on Biometrics. He also wrote “Peer-to-Peer Privacy Preserving Reputation Inquiry: An Agent Assistant Approach,” which appeared in the International Journal of Computer Science and Network Security. Additionally, Bon Sy has delivered presentations at global professional meetings, including the 8th Annual Conference on Privacy, Security and Trust in Ottawa, Canada, and the European Intelligence and Security Informatics Conference in Esbjerg, Denmark. As an Adjunct Professor of Biometrics at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly), Bon Sy orchestrated the CSAW biometrics hacking contest in 2012 and coordinated a federally funded joint research project on biometrics security and privacy between Queens College and NYU-Poly. Sy received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University. A member of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City and a supporter of Tzu Chi Academy, Bon Sy has also acted as a review panelist for the National Science Foundation and SMART of DoD, among many other organizations and journals.
