Ben’s Tips: Showing your Skills in VisualCV

Ben Temple | February 22, 2017

A Skills section is a great addition to any resume. It is a simple and direct way to provide at-a-glance insight into your work experience and the tasks you excel at for potential employers. It is also an excellent place to provide keywords targeted to a specific application - something we discuss at greater length here and here.

Each VisualCV template includes a unique Skills section for you to showcase your expertise. This Skills section includes a visually striking strength bar that you can customize to show how you rate your proficiency in each skill.

Each skill also includes a description option, where you can elaborate and provide examples to demonstrate your strength in each skill.

Instructions for updating your Skill levels can be found in our help docs: How do I change my skill level?

This is not your only option for displaying skills, however. It may be that you prefer a more subtle display, or you are not comfortable giving each skill a relative rating. If that is the case, it is perfectly acceptable to display your skills in a simple bulleted list.

Skills Section - vertical bullet list

To do this, add a Text Section and give it the name ‘Skills’. You can then add a bulleted list by clicking the bullet point button in the text editing toolbar, which will appear at the top of the window whenever you edit your resume.

Type after the bullet that appears to begin your list.

If you are using a bulleted list and you find that it is becoming too long, it may save space to display your skills in a table. This way, you can use the full width of the resume and reduce white space. Tables can be added using the text editing toolbar.
