Does an entrepreneur need a resume?

As an entrepreneur, you enjoy a certain amount of freedom. You’re free to make your own hours, free to choose the people you want to work with, free to decide on the direction of your business, free to brand your product or service in whatever way you see fit, and, best of all, you’re free from having to update your resume ever again. Right?

Not so fast.

While it is very common for self-employed entrepreneurs to think they don’t need resumes, the fact is they can still be extremely helpful in many ways. If you’ve recently launched your own startup or small business, here’s a list of reasons why you might want to think twice about tossing your CV in the garbage:

They’ve gone digital

Like just about everything else in the world, resumes have gone almost completely digital, so the hassle of having to update and print multiple copies of your CV on expensive resume paper is quickly becoming a thing of the past. People want to know who they’re dealing with

Sure, investors, venture capitalists and potential clients might not be hiring you in the traditional sense, but they still might want a quick look at your background just to get a sense of whom they are going into business with—and it looks more professional in general.

It is the basis for your bio

Your online resume can serve as a quick and accessible biographical resource for your website, speaking engagements, interviews for print, radio, TV and podcasts, press releases and any other marketing/branding initiatives that require a brief synopsis of your experience and achievements.

So, what sorts of things should you include on your resume? That depends, and realistically, you should have multiple resumes ready for different situations. If you are simply using it as a biographical resource to help promote your brand, it should contain all of the elements of a traditional resume (work experience, education, special skills, etc.). However, should your venture fail, or you simply opt to bring your talents elsewhere, your resume is a great venue for showcasing the transferable skills you’ve picked up as a result of your venture. Entrepreneurs often act as CEO, CFO, COO, IT and HR all at the same time, which means you have a ton of skills that a lot of companies want, including:

  • Conflict mediation and resolution
  • The ability to assemble and lead a team to execute projects on deadline
  • Budget management
  • Risk management
  • Strong multitasking skills
  • Recruiting, Interviewing and hiring new talent
  • And so on…

The bottom line is that as an entrepreneur in a tough competitive professional atmosphere, you want to stock your arsenal with every possible resource available. And an online resume represents a highly useful tool for a minimal investment. Even if you think you’ll never use it, the ease with which online resume services allow you to quickly create and manage, sleek, professional and flexible CVs makes it a no brainer.
