Human Resources Associate

The Ohio State University

I have developed several forms using Microsoft Office applications and Acrobat Professional for my department to increase effeciences in our processes.  These forms have been so effective we have changed our procedures completely to incorporate their use permanently.

My most noteable achievements in this role have been the development of a time sheet using Excel and an extremely efficient process to complete payroll certification.  The Excel timesheet has been adapted by OSU's IT dept and is now online and used by the entire university.  Additionally, I served on the committee which rolled out the first pilot groups of the new eTimesheet and have also developed online training materials for the eLeave system.  I am currently on the Performance Management Advisory Committee and we are finalizing the online tool that will unify performance management across Enrollment Services.  I have also developed online training materials for the new Performance Management Tool using Camtasia Studio 7.

My current position as a Human Resources Associate entails supporting around 500 staff and students in all HR related functions but my experience and skills have grown far beyond what is contained within my job description. My coworkers know that I am extremely proficient with all types of technology and software which is why they introduce me as the ‘HR guy’ and ‘the local IT guy’.Our IT department is located on the other end of our floor so I take this as a considerable compliment.I work closely with our IT department on implementing nearly all of the new tools to be used throughout Enrollment Services, often as a ‘tester’, due to my ability to identify bugs and suggest high quality improvements.I have also aided OCIO in the same fashion during the development of the eLeave and eTimesheet systems and helped roll out the new systems to the some of the first staff and students in the University.I have also worked closely with the branch campuses helping them adapt their policies to the new systems.

I created and continue to update our department’s HR SharePoint website which can be viewed within the department’s network.Through the website creation process, I have become a SharePoint expert and IT often directs SharePoint/website development questions from other departments to me.

Enrollment Services has also started using a new performance management system for which I served on the initial development committee and created online training materials which are now being used to train staff and their managers.I created these training materials using Camtasia Studio 7 which can be viewed here: http://www.visualcv.com/users/166841/cvs/199162/assets/473507.I also created a tutorial in the same fashion for the eLeave system which may soon be used by the OCIO for all university faculty and staff.

Payroll certification is a necessary process but anyone at OSU will attest that it is a tedious and time consuming process, especially from the HR side of the process.  I developed a coversheet using Adobe's Acrobat Professional which has streamlined every aspect of the process, from report creation through the final approval.  Using embedded Javascript, the coversheet auto-generates emails to the next person in the process.  The report can flow through the entire process with only four clicks per user while maintaining information in the subject and body of the email to aid in finding specific reports in the future.  In total, the entire process now takes less than half the time previous methods required.

Additionally, I am very adept at using Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Visio in Office 2007 and all previous versions.

The eMarketing specialization of the Digital Comm. BS at Franklin focuses on the recent trend of merging the three fields primarily associated with creating websites: graphic design, web development and marketing.  The course structure of my major consisted of individual classes in these areas combined with classes intended to draw upon the skills gained in those three areas and focus them towards the business perspective.

Customer Service

Customer service has been a major role in all of my work experience and I have become very adept at listening to the customers, associating with their situation, identifying their needs, conveying solutions and following up on the results.

Tech Savvy

Although this is actually an interest of mine, I do consider it a valuable skill.   My interest in and aptitude for understanding and utilizing technology has proven to be a performance enhancing skill in my current job and all previous jobs as well.     I have the ability to understand the functionality of electronic devices as well as software applications after only a few minutes of usage.  I apply this understanding to business processes related to the technology and am often able to improve the processes immediately.     I have become extremely proficient at installing and troubleshooting Windows operations systems (xp, Vista, 7; 32-bit & 64-bit).  I have also learned to install and troublesheet Linux operating systems, mainly Ubuntu optimized for netbooks but also Xandros.

PC Hardware Assembly & Maintenance

I have built several pc's from the motherboard up.  I enjoy finding parts on sites such as Newegg.com then assembling them to create a brand new computer.  I also enjoy troubleshooting hardware problems and have fixed/rebuilt several of my friends' and family members' computers.   I am very familiar with partiitioning hard drives, formatted for both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Web Development

I designed and created a the HR website for my department.  Previously our department had no centralized website.  As a result of my persistance for the creation of such a website, we now have a distributed theme amongst all areas of our department and have centralized the IT servers hosting the websites.  The HR site I created using Dreamweaver has given the staff an easy way to access our forms, benefits information and policies & procedures specific to our department.   I have used web development programs such as Dreamweaver, Google Sites, Joomla! and hand coding with HTML, CSS & Javascript.     Also, I have created several personal sites for various uses, primarily experimenting with different structures and languages.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Using Adobe Acrobat Professional to create fillable PDF forms, I have digitized many forms that were previously available only in paper format.  Among other benefits, these forms have increased our customer service, compliance with internal audit requirements and identified previously unknown and costly inefficiencies in several of our processes.     As a result of my work with Acrobat Pro, an Associate Director commented "You've digitized HR!".

Microsoft Office - all applications

I have developed several forms using Microsoft Office applications for my department to increase effeciences in our processes.  These forms have been so effective, we have changed our procedures completely to incorporate their use permanently.   My most noteable achivement using this skill has been the development of a time sheet using Excel.  Our department does not use an automated timekeeping system for non-exempt employees and my Excel time sheet has been incorporated into the process for recording time.  Aside from visual appeal, the main benefit of the Excel time sheet is automatically calculated values based on 'time in', 'time out' values entered by the user.  Previously, the values were calculated and hand written by the employee and were often illegible and/or incorrect.     Additionally, I am very adept at using Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Visio in Office 2007 and all previous versions.
