Aside from my work for the Dragon Press, I participate in a wide variety of extracurriculars. I participate in California YMCA Youth&Government, which is a statewide high-school program that allows students to take over the capital for 5 days and write/propose/debate/pass legislation, budgets, and constitutional amendments. That legislation is passed onto Governor Jerry Brown. I also have volunteered for ArtWalk and worked with the City of Ventura for several public art projects.
This is without a doubt my biggest article all year. It is about the Smarter Balanced test; what it is, how the school district prepared for it, and student reactions. I interviewed two school district staff members, two teachers, our school's vice principal, and five students. That took a long time and was very difficult to manage. But I think the finished product is a well-balanced, informative article of a higher level than the average high school news piece.
I showed initiative this year when I took on a breaking news story about two teachers' heroic actions in saving a man after he suffered a heart attack. A family friend who had been present texted me in the morning about it, and I immediately asked my editor about running a story. After clearing that, I contacted the two teachers and asked questions via email, drove to the gym to interview a staff member (they declined to comment) and called up a witness. I even got an audio recording of a source. The story was published mid-afternoon the same day. I feel that I really showed initiative on this piece by giving up my Sunday to chase down sources in order to get the story.
Throughout elementary and middle school, I was in the Gifted And Talented Education program. The program focuses on students with high IQs and standardized test scores.
An extremely selective program at my high school that includes two college lab classes and a science career introduction class in addition toe the four core science classes. Students are offered the opportunity to shadow professionals at the local hospital and participate in the Bar-coding of Life Initiative by extracting and identifying sequences of fish DNA for a worldwide database.
Member of the 2015 Constitutional Convention. Working against environmental irresponsibility by proposing revisions to the California Constitution, which will be submitted to the state government for consideration.
Creating news content for the Dragon Press that is consistent with our standards of professionalism and the Associated Press writing style. The Foothill Dragon Press has been honored at the national and regional level, including 4 consecutive "Online Pacemaker" awards and 5 consecutive "All-American" awards, the highest awards the National Scholastic Press Association offers.
I have been selected from a pool of applicants to serve as news editor next year. In addition to editing content, I will part of the Editorial Review Board.
