UNM Service Corps

Currently I am working with the UNM Service Corps.  I am placed at the Native American Community Academy as an afterschool tutor and activity leader.  During the day I tutor students in and out of classes.  Also, I help with the school boys basketball team as a coach.  I enjoy the time helping students and working the community at NACA.

Activity Leader

Rehoboth Boys & Girls Club

As a high school student I helped at the Rehoboth Elementary and the community Boys & Girls Club.  I lead several different after-school clubs such as the bike club, basketball, homework club, and cooking.  Working with the Boys & Girl Club helped me realize that I had a passion for education and working with children.

University of New Mexico

I am currently seeking a degree in education in hopes that I may return to my home community and give back through  educating the youth.  My endorsement is in Mathematics.

Basketball Coach

I enjoy playing basketball and cycling.  I consider myself technologically savvy and love playing video games casually and competitively in tournaments.  At home I like to bake and cook.

My name is Byron Begay.  Before I begin, I would like to introduce myself in Diné (Navajo) for which I am:

Yá'át'ééh shidine'é. Shí éí Byron Begay yinishyé. Tó baazhni'1zhí dine'é éí nishłį. Kinłichíi'nii dine'é éí báshíshchín. Dziłtł'ahnii dine'é éí dashicheii. Haltsooi dine'é éí dashinálí.

I have a passion for teaching and for community involvement.  As of now I am studying at the University of New Mexico to become a high school math teacher.  I have a dream to work with my home community on the Navajo Reservation.  For me, culture plays a huge role in education.  Every student has a culture and in turn a different way of understanding the world.  The same goes for communites.
