Barbara Gordon of the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA) possesses more than three decades of health care communications experience. Barbara Gordon has worked with the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Department of Defense, and the Health Resources and Services Administration, among other organizations. Today, Barbara Gordon functions as Chief Executive Officer, President, and Executive Director of the Interstitial Cystitis Association. Seeking to help the millions of people suffering from interstitial cystitis, she supports research on better treatments and a cure for the condition. Under Barbara Gordon’s leadership, the Interstitial Cystitis Association has strongly urged Congress, the National Institutes of Health, and other agencies to fund studies on the ailment. During her 3-year tenure with the Interstitial Cystitis Association, Barbara Gordon and her staff have taken steps to improve the nonprofit’s website, including shifting to a web 2.0 platform and debuting on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and iTunes. Their hard work has garnered the National Health Information Award and recognition from the American Medical Writers Association. She also has led the Interstitial Cystitis Association to effectively change the nonprofit’s structure from a fledgling enterprise to a thriving, board-run association. Since Barbara Gordon took the helm of the Interstitial Cystitis Association in 2008, almost 90% of revenue from donations funds aid for patients, researchers, and health care providers. Additionally, she helped the nonprofit weather the economic recession by improving efficiency. Barbara Gordon continues to assist health care providers and patients through the Interstitial Cystitis Association by giving them the guidance necessary for good decision-making. In addition to her work at the Interstitial Cystitis Association, Barbara Gordon has served as an expert on an interstitial cystitis panel that made recommendations adopted by the American Urological Association. The groundbreaking efforts by Gordon and other experts have led to marked public awareness and congressional exposure on the subject of interstitial cystitis.
