A board-certified radiologist from Michigan with 35 years in the medical profession, Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala spends much of his time outside of the medical field developing opportunities for individuals to develop spiritual growth. With his wife, Dr. Sumathi Mukkamala, Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala co-founded the Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage. The all-girls orphanage was established in 2007 on five acres of donated land in India. The doctors established the orphanage as a tribute to Swami Chinmayananda, head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide, and under the auspices of the Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development (CORD). The aim of Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage is to offer a home and stable environment for destitute girls, providing care until they graduate from school or choose marriage or a job. The school accommodates 160 orphaned girls. Through patience and the teachings of the Chinmaya Mission, the girls learn self-respect, morals, and social values. Because the orphanage is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, it relies on tax-deductible donations for support.
