About Anthony Barrese

An opera conductor with more than 15 years of experience, Anthony Barrese serves as music director of Chicago Folks Operetta and artistic director and principal conductor of Opera Southwest (OSW), located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His responsibilities at the latter include casting solo and ensemble personnel and participating in interviews for publicity and marketing. In 2016, Anthony Barrese will lead OSW in Il Turco in Italia and Tacredi, the first two works in a four-year cycle featuring the operatic compositions of Giochino Rossini.

Mr. Barrese holds an MM in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music. While pursuing his studies, he received two BMI Student Composer Awards and the NEC Contemporary Ensemble Composition Competition Award. Since graduating, he has appeared with several opera companies in North America and Europe.

In his leisure time, Anthony Barrese reads a wide range of literature, from the Victorian prose of Charles Dickens to the postmodern writing of David Foster Wallace. He also enjoys cycling and watching boxing matches.
