Examples of Accounting

I have studied Java in one course; I have not used it extensively outside of a classroom setting. I have thought about some small applications I plan to try after graduation. I will post my progress and results online, so you can see how I'm coming along!
Visual Basic
I have studied Visual Basic in two courses, and I find it easy to use, and versatile. I have not used it extensively outside of a classroom setting, and so I don't believe my skills have been challenged, and I am still a beginner.
I have used Oracle CASE tools for various classes, and created an Oracle database for a database course.  To my way of thinking, Oracle is not intuitive and is not  user-friendly.  Program responses to errors are confusing and not helpful in identifying the problem.  I am good at learning new programs but I’ve had a greater learning curve in mastering Oracle!
ACL Auditing Software
I used this software in my IT Audit class, to analyze sample financial data as part of a practice audit program.  I really enjoyed figuring out how to explore the data to identify patterns.
I enjoy the creative aspects of Gimp:   Improve appearance of graphics Change attributes (background, colors) of graphics Combine graphics into new images I have included a sample showing the original appearance of a photo and the final cover for a book I formatted using the photo.  I also used Gimp to create the background for the PowerPoint presentation.
Download banking information Invoice customers Reconcile accounts Print year end reports for income taxes
Sugar CRM
I have imported customer contacts into Sugar, and updated common tasks.
I have used C2 CRM extensively.  However, since my company split into two organizations my primary employer opted not to upgrade to the latest version.  This means that, while I feel qualified to use the older version of C2CRM, I have not learned the newer version.
I have used OpenOffice at home, and recently began learning to create forms.
Invoice customers Process bills Pay sales taxes Bank reconciliations Account reconciliations Run financial statements
Great Plains
I use Great Plains 7.00 at my office, although we are looking at upgrading, and I have used more recent versions in school.   Can alter reports and forms to suit company needs Familiar with: Sales Module Purchasing Module Accounts Payable Module Fixed Assets General Ledger, including financial statements
Microsoft Access 2010
I use many of the skills I learned during my training for my Microsoft Solutions Developer Certification course in my use of Access.    Created a large searchable database to track the renewable maintenance and software sales Created database to analyze accounting data, to find errors in specific accounts Created a quote-to-order database for a small software product line
PowerPoint 2010
Few presentations I see use PowerPoint to the fullest.   I can use PowerPoint to:   Create training slide shows Incorporate multiple media formats I have used PowerPoint for school presentations and for training materials for my office.  I have one sample of a slide show I created for a class presentation.
Microsoft Excel 2010
I use Excel to:   Create fill-in forms that pull in data entered in various cells and default data Perform various calculations to cross check the entries Create Pivot tables to analyze data I also use spreadsheets to reconcile accounts and perform other calculations.
Microsoft Word 2010
Set up titles and tables of contents Create forms Use most software features Word is a wonderful tool to create fill-in forms that enable a company to project a unified image.  For example, such documents as FAX coversheets, credit requests or similar ‘repeatable' forms can be updated with only minor revisions, as can corporate business letters.  Master versions of routine documents - even business letters - can facilitate clarity, consistency and professional appearance.
My Best Skill
My foremost skill is learning how to best utilize any software program.   I was a corporate trainer for a motel/hotel chain, where I taught managers to use their software to:   Collect on accounts Manage marketing Set appropriate room rates Use other software features I enjoy figuring out how to best use software to achieve goals.    These skills do rely on a great deal of buy-in from other users, but I enjoy figuring all the software systems out and teaching others how to use them to the greatest effect.  Most companies I have worked for have powerful software that they do not fully utilize.   I can help!
