Senior sub-editor

The Times Educational Supplement

Spotless copy was expected from the first sub at The TES, as was an ability to find inconsistencies in the text, images and layout. Contributors included industry experts, who had little experience of writing for magazines. Speed and a sense of humour were highly valued. Responsibilities included:

• sub-editing news, features, columns and briefs;

• checking all facts;

• producing headlines and standfirsts that inspired teachers and helped increase sales;

• supporting the production editor when the deputy chief sub-editor was absent;

• writing news and feature articles for The TES website when required;

• a friendly, professional attitude.
