The concept for a college bowl game based in Phoenix, Arizona, can be traced back to 1968, when former Arizona State University president G. Homer Durham first proposed the idea. Three years later Arizona State defeated Florida State in the first ever Fiesta Bowl by a score of 45-38. The game was attended by more than 51,000 fans at Sun Devil Stadium and televised locally on Mizlou. At the time, the 83 combined points was a record for a college bowl game. Over the following 43 years, Arizona schools would go on to win the bowl game six times, including four of the first five. The 2014 Fiesta Bowl was contested by the University of Central Florida Knights and the Baylor Bears. Over 65,000 people watched the game live, while ESPN broadcast the game nationally. The Knights won 52-42.
