Alex Groothuis

Palm Beach Community College Head Basketball Coach Alex Groothuis brings a passion for competition and a tremendous respect for the game of basketball to his coaching. In his current position since 2009, Alex Groothuis became Head Coach after serving as an Assistant for a year under Coach Tony Sheals. Alex Groothuis maintains complete oversight of the Palm Beach Community College basketball program, from recruiting to budgetary issues. In addition to being a D-I basketball coach, Alex Groothuis currently serves as a Physical Education Teacher for West Boca High School in Boca Raton, Florida. Alex Groothuis’ coaching career spans assistant and head coaching positions at multiple levels of competitive play, from high school to AAU to college. Some of Alex Groothuis’ most prominent former coaching positions include his two posts with the gold-medal winning USA Maccabi Team, which consists of collegiate and professional players. Alex Groothuis first joined the USA Maccabi Team in 2001 as an Assistant to Coach Herb Brown. Alex Groothuis returned to the USA Maccabi Team in 2008 under new Head Coach Bruce Pearl. Alex Groothuis has also formerly served as an Assistant Coach for Brooklyn College, Wagner College, and Fordham University. While at Fordham, Alex Groothuis also held the position of Director of Basketball Operations. In this position, Alex Groothuis was responsible for managing all day-to-day operations for the basketball program, including budget issues, film exchanges, and NCAA Compliance. In 2008, Alex Groothuis was the Co-head Coach of Nike Team Florida AAU, which held a number one ranking in the national 15U division. Committed to his continued growth as a coach, Alex Groothuis completed certification with the National Association of Basketball Coaches Professional Development Series. Alex Groothuis also possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications from Syracuse University and is currently in pursuit of his Master’s degree in Physical Education from Queens College.
