I have had the privilege to watch Alex play basketball competitively for 6 years. I had enjoyed coaching him personally for the past 4 years. He has grown as a person physically, mentally, and spiritually. As you get older, you hope that the athlete would mature each year. Sometimes that does not happen, but with Alex's case, he has each year. He has a desire to improve; he has a desire to be the best that he can be. This young man has been developing stronger character each year of high school.Leadership is one area that I have seen the most improvement. This year already he has had a positive effect on our team. Through making decisions with the coach on the focus of the team, to leading in team practices, Alex's impact is tremendous. He would rather lead by example than vocally; but I am working with him to do both.
This year we are focusing on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Of those character traits, Alex is strong in Loyalty, Industriousness, Skill, Condition, and Competitive Greatness. He is a real hard worker in practice. I have seen an impact through his hard work, especially as he motivates others. As he "buys into" this year's focus, his overall play will improve to another level. Every athlete has weaknesses. Alex overall weakness that hurts him the most is himself. If he could continue to learn to play through "rough times", Alex will be an asset to team. I strongly recommend him to any program that wants quality/character athletes that can contribute in ways on the floor and off.
