Tahir Heart Institute is a rural referral centre for the management of cardiovascular diseases and general medical illnesses. It is part of Fazl-e-Omar Hospital Complex and is one of the largest in the rural region of Punjab. I offer specialized cardiovascular and medical services to a population of approximately a million from this region.

I am working as a full-time Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Specialist with rights and access to cardiac catheterization laboratory. I am running per week; two outpatient sessions; including general cardiometabolic clinic, heart failure and adult congenital heart disease clinic; two cathlab sessions, one TOE, transthoracic echocardiography and stress echocardiography session.

I have admission rights to manage patient from emergency department and outpatient department. I am responsible for CCU and HDU, A&E ward rounds and I deliver evidence based care for complex cardiovascular and medical patients. I have responsibility to train and supervise house officers and medical officers on rotation. Waikato Hospital is a 600 bed regional tertiary hospital first established in 1886. Waikato Hospital provides specialist diagnostic treatment services to the population of 832, 600 and beyond to Midland Region of North Island of New Zealand.

The Midlands Cardiothoracic Unit is the New Zealand's largest cardiac unit and the specialist complex coronary and structural heart disease interventions are provided to most part of North Island of New Zealand from south of Auckland region up to Wellington.

I completed training in interventional cardiology and acquired proficiency in coronary interventions and assisted in various structural interventions as per CSANZ (Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand) and RACP requirements.

I skilled in percutaneous complex coronary interventions as first operator in 450 PCIs and 100 Primary PCIs. I acquired experience of FFR and IVUS for assessment of coronary lesions.

I was Involved as second operator in Structural Heart Disease interventions including ASD/PFO closure, Balloon aortic valvuloplasty, VSD closure, Mitral valve paravalvular leak closure, Transcatheter aortic valve implantation including exposure to Edwards and Core Valve implantations.

I was actively Involved in acute oncall roster for primary PCI and management of acute cardiovascular emergencies in oncall roster.

Interventional Cardiology

  • I have performed more than 5000 diagnostic procedures including left and right heart catheterizations, graft studies and peripheral angiograms. I have performed more than 2000 radial procedures.
  • I have assisted 500 percutaneous coronary interventions as second operator.
  • I have performed more than 1200 percutaneous coronary interventions as first operator and 250 primary PCIs; these include complex interventions and patients with multiple co-morbidities. I am routinely performing complex PCI on left main stem, bifurcation lesions, chronic total occlusion and multivessel PCI in stable and unstable coronary syndromes.
  • I am skilled in FFR and IVUS investigations for coronary physiology and intracoronary anatomy.
  • I am proficient in performing intra-aortic balloon pump, temporary pacing wire insertions and pericardiocentesis.
  • I am certified operator of Starclose, Exoseal and Angioseal Vascular Closure Devices.
  • I have been a second assistant for TAVI and first assistant for various structural heart disease interventions. Teaching Experience

I was actively engaged in teaching of medical students from University of Melbourne and Basic Physician Trainees of RACP. I participated in arranging tutorials and teaching sessions for Basic Physician Trainee Registrars for preparation of short and long cases for FRACP examination.

I was a Teaching Fellow at Bond University and involved in regular teaching of medical students from Bond and Griffith Universities, Australia and also in the tutorials of house officers and residents in UK and Australian Hospitals. I also conducted educational seminars for updating cardiology residents and registrars in rotation on various cardiovascular topics.

I am currently involved in the teaching and training of house officers and middle grade doctors at Tahir Heart Institute, Pakistan. I am also involved in training of nursing and paramedical staff and staff of cardiac catheterization laboratory at Tahir Heart Institute.
