Teaching Philosophy

“In a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have.”-- Lee Iacocca

As an Art teacher I believe my role in the classroom should be a facilitator to students allowing them to make connections, problem solve, and explore. It is also my responsibility to cultivate a life long interest and appreciation of Art and Artmaking.

  • Visual Art programs are essential for critical thinking and problem solving skills, art appreciation, and creative thinking. Art is a universal language that transcends our own language barriers. Students learn this language as a set of visual symbols that allows them to appreciate Art around the world and the diversity of the many culture’s that created it.
  • We live in an increasingly visual world with television, the internet, and advertising. We want students to be visually literate but capable of making their own statement while sorting through the images of everyday life.
  • I believe the content and strategies used to teach Art are very influential to the classroom and student’s learning. Discipline based art education is only one component to an effective strategy. I believe it is important to have a multicultural approach integrated into the curriculum and to explore concepts through themes allowing students to make connections to other subjects, cultures, artists, and techniques.
