Responsibilities: data entry of patient intake evaluations; conducting literature reviews on brain trauma and language learning in preparation for running a study with program's patients; gathering raw data on different aspects and life/mental health outcomes or challenges of patients' experiences with educational services such as ESL and GED classes, as the basis for a study; helping run the program's Monday night medical/psychological clinic by facilitating doctor-patient interactions, addressing patient queries, guiding new patients through the process, and giving out MetroCards; making medical referral appointments; contacting educational resources and updating their information; compiling a list of academic resources accessible to refugee and immigrant children.

Sexual Health Initiatives to Foster Transformation (SHIFT) Undergraduate Advisory Board, Columbia University

Advisory Board Member

Members of the advisory board are selected through an interview process, and assist a panel of sociological and psychological researchers in designing ethnographic and quantitative research studies aimed at capturing a broad range of sexual, social, academic, and substance use practices of the Columbia community over time. The goal of these studies is to identify predictors of both positive and negative sexual practices and of gender-based misconduct, in order to come up with viable methods of prevention of sexual violence and better prevention education. Member responsibilities include: attending weekly meetings to discuss parts of the studies in detail; reviewing survey and interview questions and suggesting changes; devising participant recruitment strategies; coming up with participant incentives; and contributing to the researchers' cultural knowledge of specific undergraduate practices. The lead researchers include Shamus Khan, Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Graduate Studies at Columbia, Claude Mellins, PhD, and Jennifer Hirsch, PhD.
