Creating VisualCVs / Add Portfolio Items
Now that you've built text sections, enhance your VisualCV with multimedia items from your portfolio.
You've built your portfolio gallery. Now, add portfolio items to your VisualCV.
(Oops, I haven't yet built my portfolio gallery. Tell me how)
To add portfolio items:
- If you've just created a new VisualCV, you will already be in the VisualCV editor. If not, on the Home page click Edit next to the VisualCV to which you want to add portfolio items.
- Click Add Content to Your VisualCV.
- Decide whether you want to add your portfolio section to the main column of your VisualCV or to the sidebar area, and then click Portfolio.
- Change the title of the portfolio section by clicking the title, typing the new name, and clicking OK.
- If you have added the portfolio section to the main column, choose whether you want to display two, three, or four portfolio items side by side.
- Click Add a Portfolio Item, click Choose Portfolio Item, and select an item you previously uploaded to your portfolio. (If you haven't yet created your portfolio, we'll give you a chance to do so. Tell me how to build my portfolio)
- Type a title and description for the item. Format the text in the item's description as you'd like. Apply bold, italics, underlining, or highlighting. Add bullets or a numbered list. Link text in the description to a website, if appropriate, by highlighting the text, clicking
, and providing the URL to the external website. - Click Save to save your entry.
- Reposition entries within the portfolio section, if desired, by clicking the
and
buttons. - If you want to add other portfolio items, click Add a Portfolio Item at the bottom of the portfolio section.
To link an image to another portfolio item or to an external website:
When you add an image from your portfolio to your VisualCV, people who click the image when they view your VisualCV will see a larger version of the image. You can change this behavior so that the image links to another portfolio item or to an external website instead. Here are some examples where this might be useful:
- Linking to an external website: Suppose you want to showcase a website you designed. You can create a "thumbnail" image of the site's home page and then link the image from your VisualCV to the actual website so your viewers can see all of the hard work you did with navigation and interactivity.
- Linking to another portfolio item: If your portfolio section contains a document, your viewers will see an icon that represents that type of document (for example, if your document is a PDF, your portfolio section will contain the icon
). Wouldn't it be neat to show a unique image for that document instead, such as the front cover of a report you wrote or the first slide of a presentation you prepared?
Here's how:
- Save the item (for example, report cover, PowerPoint slide, or snapshot of a website home page) as an image file such as a .jpg or .gif. You can do so by copying and pasting the item into PowerPoint or into an image editor such as Paint, Paintbrush, or Photoshop Elements and then using that tool's "save as" feature.
- Upload the image file to your portfolio. (If you are linking the image to another portfolio item, be sure to upload that item to your portfolio too.)
- Add the image to the portfolio section of your VisualCV.
- Click Link beneath the image.
- To link the image to an external website, click the Link to External Website tab, type the URL of the website in the Enter the URL box, and then click Save. (This action applies only to this instance of the image on this VisualCV. You can always reverse this action later by clicking the Reset link.)
Show me - To link the image to another portfolio item, click the Link to Portfolio Item tab, select the portfolio item to which you want to link the image (for example, the document your image represents), and then click Save.

TIPS:
- To take a "snapshot" of your screen (for example, to create an image of a website's home page) on Windows, press the Alt and the Print Screen keys. On Mac OS X, use the Grab utility. Both of these methods copy the "snapshot" to the clipboard, which you can paste into your favorite image editor and save as an image file.
- If you change your mind about including a portfolio item in your VisualCV, you can remove it from your VisualCV at any time. It'll stay in your portfolio gallery for you to use again later.
- The portfolio section in the main (wide) column only accepts images and documents. If you want to add an audio or a video clip to your VisualCV, add your portfolio section to the sidebar area instead. Or, you can add an image that represents your audio or video (for example, a snapshot of the first video frame) to the main column and then link that image to the audio or video. Tell me how
- You won't be able to play video clips until you preview your VisualCV. Tell me more about videos
