Michael Duncan has been a part of Southeast Queens since 1995 with his wife Sophie and their four children. He attended Baruch College where he attained a Bachelor's in Business Administration. A credit to his tireless involvement in the community, he was named Chief of staff to the 31st Council District, where he managed the entire 31st Council District-- Rosedale, Laurelton, Springfield Gardens, the Rockaways, parts of Cambria Heights, and South Ozone Park. Mike has always been involved in community affairs and regularly attends Civic and Community board meetings.
For the past 15 years, he has been a very active parent leader in the public school system, having served as PTA President at PS 195, IS 231, and George Washington Carver High School for the Sciences and as Vice President of the President's Council in District 29. He has organized community protests against the suspension centers at IS 231 and successfully Springfield Gardens High School Complex (SGHSC).
Over 15 years ago, Michael revived the Rosedale Soccer Club for youths between the ages of 5 through 19. The program is designed to help the youth build character through sports. He also founded a non-profit organization that offers free immigration and income tax services to the residents of South East Queens.
In addition, Michael has led the fight to remove the GEO prison from our neighborhood and continues to fight against the construction of a "Hot Sheet Motel" across the street from the SGHSC, and within 300 yards of IS 231 and PS 251.
As our youths are being stopped and frisked at record levels, as our schools continue on a downward spiral path, as many families face foreclosures, we need a strong advocate for our youth, education and quality of life. Michael strongly believes in the "Each One Support One Concept", where leadership is built from the ground up; where community members support businesses within the community and in return the businesses help the members of their community build a strong unity and quality of life.
Mike's passion is to lead the community through advocating on behalf of self-reliance by implementing the philosophy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.
