Uttley was co-founder and president of carbonhouse, inc. a brand consultancy and design firm, from April 1999-August 2008. While with the firm, he worked with a wide range of clients, including Sprint Center; AT&T Center; Prudential Center; Klaussner Home Furnishings; Visit Charlotte (Convention & Visitors Bureau); UNC Charlotte (Belk College of Business Administration and MBA program); Rowan Regional Medical Center; Shelton Vineyards; and others. Uttley was primarily responsible for sales, marketing and human resources and helped grow carbonhouse into a nationally-recognized organization.

Prior to forming carbonhouse, Uttley served as Director of Public Relations with Luquire George Andrews, Inc., a leading marketing communications firm in Charlotte. In this position, he was responsible for overseeing public relations activities for clients, including media relations, employee communication programs, crisis communication and strategic planning. Clients included the NCAA Men’s Final Four Basketball Championship (1994) and the Carolina Panthers NFL football team.

Before joining Luquire George Andrews, Uttley was an account manager with Epley Associates/Public Relations in Charlotte (now Catevo Group). He was responsible for planning, developing and executing programs to assist clients in meeting corporate public relations objectives. Extensive writing assignments included news releases; media advisories; brochures; direct mail collateral; news/feature stories and case studies; corporate fact sheets and biographies; video scripts; and advertisements. Uttley was also responsible for media relations on a local, state and national level.

Uttley began his career conducting public relations programs for publishing, business-to-business and consumer product clients. Responsibilities included writing news releases and related promotional materials, and implementing story placements in national publications and broadcast media.
