A veteran of Washington D.C. policy creation, Dr. Sean Tunis leverages years of experience at the highest levels of the public health care system toward his position as the Director of the Baltimore-based Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP). In this role, Dr. Sean Tunis works with leading figures from the domestic and international health care industry on the development of new research methods designed to maximize the effectiveness of future medical technologies. Dr. Sean Tunis founded the CMTP in 2006 after a five-year tenure as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In his work with the CMS, Dr. Sean Tunis played a vitally important role in assessing the quality and effectiveness of the U.S. Medicare and Medicaid Programs. Specifically, Dr. Sean Tunis led the development of national coverage policies, established an objective system of measurement for quality standards, and initiated the Quality Improvement Organization program, among various other achievements. Dr. Sean Tunis also acted as CMS Administrator’s senior advisor on clinical and scientific policy and served as the co-chair of the CMS Council on Technology and Innovation. Dr. Sean Tunis began working for the organization in the role of Director of the CMS Coverage and Analysis Group. Before entering the field of public policy, Dr. Sean Tunis specialized in the clinical practice of internal and emergency medicine. A graduate of the Stanford University School of Medicine, Dr. Sean Tunis received his residency training through UCLA and the University of Maryland. In addition to his MD, Dr. Sean Tunis also holds a Master’s degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine in Health Services Research and a Bachelor’s degree from the Cornell University School of Agriculture in Biology and History of Science.
