Professor Dr Hj Primuharsa Putra Bin Sabir Husin Athar is a Consultant ENT-Head & Neck Surgeon and one of the pioneers at KPJ Seremban Specialist Hospital (KPJ SSH). He had been a Consultant ENT-Head & Neck Surgeon at KPJ SSH since 3 January 2005. He was formerly a Senior Lecturer and Consultant at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and had 22 years of working experience as a medical doctor.
He holds the academic position as a Clinical Professor of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, sits in board of Study Master of ORL-HNS and program coordinator for Masters of ORL-HNS at KPJ Healthcare University College (KPJUC). He is also visiting lecturer at School of Medicine, Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences and a visiting consultant at Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre.
Dr Primuharsa Putra, better known as Har, is a Malaysian of Minangkabau descent. Both of his parents were of Minangkabau descent from Sumatra (Pariaman). His father was a doctor who graduated from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia and his mother was a teacher. He completed his primary education in Medan, Indonesia, Jalan Bukit Primary School, Kajang, Selangor and secondary education at Kajang High School and Cochrane Road School. He then did his matriculation at Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah College, Kuching, Sarawak.
He obtained his Medical Degree (MD) from UKM in 1991 and completed his three years compulsory service with the Ministry of Health (MOH). He began his career in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery as a Medical Officer at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Kuala Terengganu in 1993 under the guidance and supervison of Head of Department, Dr Abd Majid Md Nasir. He then proceeded to complete a four-years residency training in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the same university and received his Master degree in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (MSurg ORL-HNS) in 2000. During his residency programme, he was formally trained in ORL-HNS and gained valuable insight and experience under several excellent surgeons and teachers such as: Prof Dr Lokman Saim, Clinical Prof Dr Abdullah Sani, Prof Dr Balwant Singh Gendeh and Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Solahuddin Kenali. His dissertation was under the guidance of Clinical Prof Dr Abdullah Sani and was focused on laser turbinate surgery. He completed his gazettement at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Kuala Terengganu and gazetted as a Specialist by Ministry of Health of Malaysia in January 2001. He is a National Specialist Register (NSR) accredited specialist in Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and currently registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and Academy’s Specialist Register.
He has served the Ministry of Health from 1991 to 2000 and has worked in several hospital including Hospital USM, Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Kuala Terengganu, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban and Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang. For his outstanding services, he was awarded the Excellent Service Award from Terengganu Health Department in 1996.
He then joined the Faculty of Medicine, UKM to serve as a senior lecturer and consultant in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery from 2001 to 2005. During his tenure, he was involved in various academic and administrative committee, research, and training, of both the undergraduate and postgraduate students. He was the internal examiner for the Part 1 Examination of Master of Surgery and Final Year Undergraduate Medical Examination. Apart from that, he was the co-ordinator for the Combined Head & Neck Oncology Clinic and helped to establish the swallowing clinic/service in UKM Medical Centre in 2004.
Academically, he is the author or co-author of 55 peer-reviewed scientific articles in Medical and Dental Journals including 2 book chapters in a book. He is an editorial board member of the KPJ Medical Journal and the Journal of Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia. He is the co-editor of the MSO-HNS coffee-table book published in conjunction with the 30th (1981-2011) Annivesary of the Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons. It is the first effort to record the journey made by MSO-HNS. Furthermore, he is also reviewer of 13 international and national scientific journals such as for the Medical Journal of Malaysia, Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences and Dental Traumatology. He has presented more than 90 papers and has delivered lectures as an invited speaker at international and national congresses or workshops. He has been on the teaching faculty for head and courses conducted at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center and Airlangga University, Surabaya, Indonesia. Apart from that he had won several free papers presentation awards. His biography was published in Marquis Who's Who in the World 2010, Marquis Who's Who in Science & Engineering 2011-2012, Marquis Who's Who in Medicine & Healthcare 2011-2012, Marquis Who's Who in Asia 2012 and Malaysia Who's Who 2013-2014. Apart from the outstanding academic activities, he is a frequent speaker in numerous public health programmes and contributes to continuing education activities by giving lectures for doctors, nurses and other paramedics, on the management of common ENT-Head & Neck diseases.
He is actively involved with professional bodies and has held several important positions. He is a Fellow of College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, Fellow of International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) and Past President of Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists-Head & Neck Surgeons (MSO-HNS). He is a member of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Specialty Subcommittee (National Specialist Register ), Board Member of the Asian Society of Head and Neck Oncology (ASHNO) Governing Council and member of National Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Specialty Training Board. He has served as President of the MSO-HNS (2012-2013) as well as the Honorary Secretary (2001-2002) and Executive Committee (2007-2008, 2010-2011, 2011-2012) . He was the Executive committe member (1994-1995) and honorary secretary (1995-1996) of the Malaysian Medical Association (Terengganu Branch). Besides being a member of various professional societies, he also was involved in various community services.
At KPJ Healthcare Berhad, he is a member of the KPJ Group Clinical Governance Action Committee (CGAC) and had served as a member of KPJ Group Clinical Risk Management Committee (CRMC) for the period 2010-2012.
At hospital level he chairs and sits in various committees. He is the chairman of Risk Management Committee, Patient Safety Goals Committee, Research and Development Committee and advisor for 5S Committee. He also has donated the 5S rotational trophy for 5S competition winner, known as Prof Dr Primuharsa Putra's Cup to KPJ Seremban Specialist Hospital on 14 Nov 2013.
Apart from having experiences in management of a wide range of ENT – Head & Neck diseases, he has a special interest in Head & Neck Oncology Surgery, Anterior Skull Base Surgery, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)/Snoring. He also has attended various workshops and training programmes in Singapore, Hong Kong and Birmingham.
He has special interests in Medical Antique and established his personal Medical Gallery in 1993. His late father, Allahyarham Dr Sabir Husin Athar, inspired the idea. Currently part of his collections are displayed in his suite at KPJ Seremban Specialist Hospital. He is married to Dr Hjh Nor Mahani Harun, a Consultant Paediatrician and is blessed with two sons and two daughters.
