Accomplishments:

  • Received the 1987 DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD from Chancellor Joseph Duffy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst;
  • Received the 1997 OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD from Dean Bailey Jackson in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst;
  • Received the 1997 POINTS OF EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR TEACHING from Phi Delta Kappa National Honor Society;
  • Received the 2005DISTINGUISHED FACULTY MEMBER AWARD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst Alumni Association.
  • Retired May 31, 2014.

Responsibilities:

  •  In addition to the teaching, advising, service, and scholarly activities listed above, I helped design and implement two model programs for pre-service elementary and secondary education teachers.  Both programs received national recognition for their innovative approaches to teacher education. They were the Model Elementary Teacher Education Program (METEP) and the Mathematics, English, Science, and Technology Education Program (MESTEP).

Accomplishments:  

  • I was awarded tenure in May, 1980.  As part of the tenure review, I received high praise from Dr. Seymour Papert, Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, for the work I have been doing to merge the fields of mathematics learning and brain research.

Accomplishments:  

  • I presented at numerous regional and national meetings of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).  I attained level one graduate faculty status which made me eligible to direct doctoral research in my areas of expertise.
