Summary

I am a third year doctoral student in the Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program and North Carolina State University, where I am employed with a teaching assistantship. I am currently working toward my dissertation, which focuses on how young women use video sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo as spaces to enact activism in their audiences, and build communities with others around the world. This work is driven by a cultural studies methodology that relies on feminist identity theory as a lens to interrogate trends amongst users on these video sharing sites.

Instructor of Record — English 323: Writing in the Rhetorical Tradition 

This course focuses on classical rhetorical techniques of invention, arrangement, and style and applies them to contemporary rhetorical situations. Students write continuously throughout the semester and much of our in-class time is spent in small group discussions or debates with the whole class. Emphasis is placed on persuasion and argument, knowing one's audience, and constructing an ethos.

Instructor of Record — English 101: Academic Writing and Research 

This is a first-year writing course. It focuses on basic principles of rhetoric and strategies for academic inquiry and argument. Critical reading and writing skills are strongly foregrounded. Students explore writing across the curriculum, which means they practice literacy across a range of academic domains, which affords them the recognition that first-year composition is not limited to the English 101 classroom.

 

I participated in NCSU's pilot program of hybrid teaching in Fall 2010, and taught my second hybrid course Spring 2011. In a hybrid course, half of class takes place in a physical, wired classroom; the other half takes place entirely online. I redesigned my course to fit these new requirements, focusing strongly on digital resources for discussion, documents that were available via our course management system, and a great deal of student writing that took place in online public forums.

Graduate Teaching Assistantship — GenEd110: World Civilizations 1 

As a teaching assistant, I worked with a professor who taught General Education 110, a required first-year course on social, political, and philosophical/religious systems in early civilizations. I was responsible for the grading exams for about 70 students, and providing academic assistance for those enrolled in the course.

Instructor of Record — English 101: Introductory Writing 

This is a first-year writing class, and I focused on rhetorics of race, class, sexuality, gender, and cultural stereotypes in mass media and political media, as well as the rhetoric of topics that affect college campuses. I frequently used print media and video clips in order to facilitate discussion of the rhetorical appeals of mass media and digital technologies.

 

I participated in the Freshman Focus First-Year Experience Program in Fall 2008. The program places first-year college students into living-learning communities, taking classes with students in their dorm. Instructors work together across disciplines to provide a positive and supportive academic experience for their sets of students.

I provided assistance and facilitated small groups of students enrolled in first-year writing. We discussed writing strategies, I provided feedback on their assignments, and we worked toward improving their writing and rhetorical capacities.

Computer Lab Program Instructor — Eng 300: Computers in English 

 

I taught small classes (from 3-10 students) how to use various computer applications for this one credit course. Applications included Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, iMovie, and InDesign.
