Early Medieval Art (a survey of medieval art produced between 600 and 1050 CE)
Features of the course included two primary learning objectives:
- extensive knowledge of works of art produced in the early Middle Ages and an understanding of the importance of historical context in the discovery of original intended meaning;
- the intensive examination of works of art;
- the close reading of primary texts; and
- the interrelating of image and text in order to embed early medieval works of art in their original historical context.
Early Medieval Monasteries (a graduate seminar)
Features of the course included:
- analysis of the artistic production and consumption of select early medieval monasteries alongside examination of the broader material and intellectual culture of each individual monastery; and
- opportunities for students to present research at various stages of development.
