I’m a new(ish), keen librarian with a passion for effective library instruction and the development of good, solid collections that library users really want. I guess I’m sorta old school like that.
I’m experienced in delivering specialized instruction and research help services to students and faculty in the areas of business and management. Lately, I’ve even been doing this in French, much to the chagrin of the French language. I focus my teaching on innovative, engaging information literacy, working closely with faculty to design tailored library workshops and lectures. My in-class sessions have sometimes included in-class activities and group work, and technologies such as Clickers and Survey Monkey. I’ve also been involved in developing online instructional modules using Adobe Captivate, and delivering online reference services using instant messenger and Jing.
I also focus on collections development, including selection through online platforms like Gobi and Oasis, but also by staying on top of book reviews, the world of online business information tools, and even through scanning those old fashioned paper catalogues that publishers put out. I’m also involved with a fabulous project in partnership with on-campus career services to bring to life an awesome career books collection for our students. This has required me to develop a comprehensive collections policy, to dig through reports that I created in our ILS (Millennium), and to collaboratively create an outreach and marketing campaign aimed at students and faculty.
Lately I’ve been busy as Chair of the Re:Generations Committee, a sub-committee of the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries. We do cool stuff like develop sessions for CLA’s annual conference, host a great blog, provide a resume review service, and do outreach to new and aspiring academic librarians.
In the past I’ve also been active with FIAA (Faculty of Information Alumni Association), where I chaired the events planning and social media committees. I also served on York University Libraries Scholarly Communications Committee, which focuses on bringing scholarly communications-related initiatives and awareness to the university.
I like saying yes to new projects, and working out the details later. I love Lie-berry Land – every quirky nook and cranny.
