PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
My philosophy of education is based on the solid premise that education is the basic building blocks required to function in today’s society as a successful and contributing citizen. It is what allows us to make informed decisions, choose between right and wrong, and devise innovative ideas for making our world a better place. Education opens up more doors and helps us to reach our full potential and fulfill our dreams. As educators, we are responsible for helping students choose and stay on the right path to success. It is up to us to provide them with the essential tools, skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are necessary for becoming responsible, proactive, and effective citizens.
My main thought concerning business education is that it needs to be more inclusive. Many people, including myself, find the subject of business to be fascinating, but often find the context that is used to teach and promote business education intimidating and unapproachable. From my experience, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds are interested in pursuing an education in business and can contribute a great deal to the field, but veer away from earning a business degree because they often believe they lack the necessary background to pursue an MBA. The image and language used to promote business programs needs to be more inclusive. The cost of tuition further entrenches student impressions of an unachievable goal. My own experience serves to inform my understanding of the challenges and perspectives students face regarding inclusion.
In addition to addressing students’ diverse economic and cultural backgrounds, academic institutions also need to take into account multiple intelligences and individuals’ unique learning capabilities and challenges. As a person with a learning disability, I have learned to manage the rigors of academia with success. I believe that students need instructors who are versatile in their teaching style and recognize a variety of learning styles and abilities. Our students come to us with differing abilities, which require us to offer them access to quality education, regardless of their differences. I am constantly looking for more opportunities to improve my teaching skills. I have participated in several teaching and curriculum development programs. I have also utilized Youtube, Blogs, Wikis, Second Life, and Facebook in the classroom to adapt to this new generation of “connected” students.
Though learning occurs via a number of different mediums, it can only happen when a person is presented with something that he/she is interested in. By utilizing methods and programs listed above, as well as staying in-tune with students’ other interests, I am able to reach out to each individual, and actively include them in the learning process. Collaborative activities are also an effective way to engage the students and capture their attention and interest. By incorporating many of these strategies and approaches, I have been able to help a wide array of students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, developmental level, etc, earn an advanced degree.
I enjoy interacting with faculty and students, and I am motivated and inspired by the innovation and creativity that goes on in higher education. My hope is to leave students with a positive impression of education, and the desire to continue learning, like myself. My goal is to foster a highly supportive and inclusive school community, where each student feels safe, welcome, and appropriately challenged.
