The Importance of Women's Healthcare

Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, a renowned gynecologic oncologist, discusses the importance of women's health care and regular gynecological visits. Dr. Elizabeth Poynor runs her own private practice in New York City, where she focuses on women's health issues in a private and comfortable setting. Recently, much space in the media has been devoted to arguments over women's health care issues and how women's health should be funded. Regardless of where the funding comes from, women's health services and gynecology are important for the well-being of the women who live in this country, and it is every woman's right to pursue good health and quality of life. Below are listed some of the important reasons that women should see a gynecologist for an annual exam and some of the conditions that can be prevented and treated by these regular visits. Cervical Cancer DetectionThis is the most important reason to attend an annual exam. Annual Pap smears detect early signs of what could turn into cervical cancer, which is easily prevented and treated with regular screenings.Breast Cancer DetectionDuring an annual exam, doctors also examine the breasts for any early signs of breast cancer.Other Heath IssuesA typical annual exam includes a pelvic exam, an abdominal exam, and other simple medical procedures such as taking a woman's vitals and recording her height and weight. Even though an annual exam is primarily recommended for cervical cancer screening and Pap smear tests, the exam evaluates a woman's overall health.
