Top 10 Twitter outlet in Chicago

We're No. 1!

We're consistently a top-rated account on Twittergrader's list of elites in Chicago, which is the third-ranked top Twittering city in the world. A few weeks after turning off our automatic feed, Chicago Sun-Times' Twitter – @suntimes – account vaulted from 150 followers to nearly 15,000 active, engaged participants by aggressively jumping into the Twitterverse in a personal way. This was done at my urging, and I am the primary caregiver that answers the question: "What are you doing?"

We've grown a following by doing more than just posting links. Through casual conversation, taking interest in our followers lives, asking for input and help on stories, and holding Tweet ups, although not as many I'd like, we're growing a true community of people who think of the Sun-Times brand as more than just a media company.

I also make use of Twitter-related services such as Blip.fm, music sharing; BrightKite.com, location-based tweeting; and Seesmic.com and 12seconds.tv, video Q&A,- to further the avenues readers can get information from us.

Blogger for suntimes.com

Shiny Objects

I report, write and edit several suntimes.com blogs from business and media to our newest blogs, Shiny Objects and Sports Pros(e). This is part of our effort to not only provide breaking news 24/7 via our Web site, but also jump into trends and pop culture to put ourselves at the forefront of what people are talking about online.

Live video chat production

Live video chat production

I created and serve as the executive producer of a series of live Web chats with Sun-Times columnists and reporters covering topics from sports to consumer affairs to news and commentary. These moderated forums run live from the Sun-Times newsroom, originally working with Ustream.com but moving to the Mogulus.com platform.

EXTRA! edition editor

inauguration front

The most recent editions covered the Gov. Blagojevich arrest on Dec. 9, 2008 and the inauguration of President Barack Obama on Jan. 20, 2009. Our Extra! editions, a rare commodity in this day and age, are usually reported, edited, designed and sent to press in a matter of hours - a consequence of covering a rapidly breaking news event.

The P.M. Download Edition

P.M. Edition front

A free supplemental edition of the Sun-Times available as an 8.5x11 downloadable PDF file each weekday. I was part of the team that conceived and implemented the project and continue some daily editing duties for it. The publication is intended as an evening commute edition and contains news, sports, entertainment and business reports.

With the Band concert series

With the Band concert series

A new venture we're exploring to provide a live-streaming concert series on suntimes.com that highlights up-and-coming Chicago acts. In addition to the live feed, which is archived and embeddable, there is a taped interview/highlights component.

Multimedia online presentations

Vuvox presentation on Barack Obama

This is a continually updating multimedia project that started before the Democratic National Convention. It tells the story of the public life of then president-elect in pictures, sound, video and the reporting of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Unconventional Wisdom

Blogging the Democratic National Convention

Suntimes.com web producer Mark Bieganski and I planned and implemented the Sun-Times' first dedicated Web coverage of a major event. Mark and I worked to blog, shoot and edit video, produce multimedia content and help our print staff do the same for the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Linked is a short chat I had with hot Chicago-based poll blogger Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com.
