Career Summary

As a Partner with Bibury Partners, an early stage invesment and advisory firm, I evaluate and select promising early stage technology companies and provide management and marketing consulting to portfolio companies.

One of our latest investments is in VisualCV.  I recently spent several months advising a team of Internet, technology, and recruiting veterans that will revolutionize the resume, improve Internet recruiting, open unparalleled opportunities in career management, and bring a whole new level of professionalism to online professional networking!

I led the marketing launch strategy that included developing the corporate website, SEO and SEM, online advertising, partner marketing, and media outreach.  It was a pleasure to work with a phenomenal internal team, and a savvy PR partner, Qorvis Communications.  In the first day we achieved features in The Washington Post, TechCrunch, About.com, and dozens of influential outlets. Within a month of our launch, we enjoyed coverage in over 100 outlets, building momentum for mindshare and customer acquisition. One of my favorite articles about VisualCV was posted on an up and coming blog, Transformagination.

CoFounder, Vice President, Marketing, webMethods, Inc.
As VP of marketing, provided marketing and management leadership that helped company grow from a basement start-up, through venture funding, IPO and beyond into a worldwide publicly traded company, with annual revenue of $200 million.  I enjoyed building the marketing organization, leading strategy and execution on brand and positioning, online marketing, lead generation and direct response, advertising, partner marketing, public relations, analyst relations, events and customer conferences, sales support, and market research.

At webMethods I was best known for rigorous analysis to deliver ROI.  I played a pivotal role in positioning the groundbreaking technology of the company from a technical tool into a compelling story of competitive business advantage that helped create demand for and win customers across the Fortune 100 and Global 2000 market.

During my tenure, webMethods was singled out for it's "marketing flair" by the Gartner Group.

webMethods has enjoyed well over $1B in sales to date and continues to add value to corporations the world over.

Director, AOL.com
Led team during transition of AOL.com from corporate destination on the web to its launch as a search portal on the Internet.  Worked with internal stakeholders in executive management, UI research, advertising, technical group, NYC agencies to define business model and  roll-out new portal products.

Director of Marketing, Low + Associates Social Marketing Agency
Led development of marketing agency's direct response services including mail and print.  Managed multi-year, national direct response campaigns, wrote marketing plans and presented pitches to prospective clients from Federal, corporate and nonprofit sectors.

Earlier in my career I enjoyed helping produce CNN’s Larry King Live and Inside Politics as a production assistant, and publishing a monthly magazine for Australia Post.

Community and Philanthropic Leadership

Chairman and CoFounder, The 118 Foundation which makes grants to nonprofits in the US supporting housing, healthcare and education, primarily for working poor families, and international organizations supporting microenterprise development in East Africa.

Our philosophy at The 118 Foundation is to make a difference in our own community, while also investing to improve the lives of many in developing countries.

The Foundation makes grants or investments in nonprofits that help working poor families in the areas of housing, healthcare and education in the DC metro area.  We also invest in international organizations, including microenterprise development in East Africa.  Some of the regional organizations we have supported include:

Higher Achievement, The Fishing School, Second Chance Employment, Inova Health System, CharityWorks, Boys & Girls Homes, Carlos Rosario Inernational Career Center, Community of Hope, The Women’s Center, Calvary Women’s Services, and dozens more.  International organizations include Five Talents and Kibera, Kenya Project  with Compassion International.

From January 2000 until December 2004, The 118 Foundation was known as the webMethods Foundation.  As Chairman, I led innovative programs to educate, inspire, and involve webMethods employees to play a role in community investment and service.  The Foundation provided training for employees in Fairfax, VA and Silicon Valley to form grantmaking teams, which made over 50 grants to nonprofits that help low income families.

We are also founding investors in Venture Philanthropy Partners, an innovative fund that is at the forefront of thought leadership and execution, investing in nonprofits to bring social change.

The Foundation has been recognized widely in regional, Silicon Valley and national media for its leadership, including being nominated (along with companies like Whole Foods) for the Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy award, chaired by actor Paul Newman.

The 118 Foundation makes grants proactively, and no longer solicits requests for proposals.

A Few webMethods Highlights

Icon_pdf_16 Revolutionary Advertising - WSJ

This ad reached a key set of prospective customers and influencers with our B2B message before the term became a buzzword representing the potential of a radically new online business model.

Feature Story

webMethods Women

webMethods knew that best-in-class companies harness skills, experiences, and intellects of diverse teams. Over half the management team positions were held by women. A few of us were featured in a TechWay article on women in leadership at emerging tech companies.

Well before webMethods made Wall St. history as the most successful software IPO , we experienced something unusual for an early stage company: a feature in the Wall Street Journal. This was the result of unrelenting focus on PR and media relations.

We visited this business as part of our work with Five Talents. This corner market offered an amazing variety of products for the local neighborhood. Cooperative savings and loans are growing in Kenya.
