Model of Excellence

excellence_award

Analytic Reporting for Annuities received a Model of Excellence Award from InfoCommerce Group, which said in its announcement that “Analytic Reporting for Annuities is an excellent use of aggregated transactional data to create a powerful new analytical data product.”

As an independent consultant to DTCC I performed the opportunity and market assessment, authored the strategy and business case to fund the initiative, developed the requirements, and brought the product to market. My ongoing responsibilities include oversight and direction of sales, marketing, product development, strategic partnerships, and strategy development.

Product of the Year

M&A Advisor Award

I won The M&A Advisor's M&A Product of the Year Award for the LexisNexis M&A Practice Center. This innovative and unique information solution meets the needs of M&A attorneys throughout the lifecycle of a deal by aggregating disparate high value content created for different industry verticals and organizing it across the value chain of the attorney. It makes attorneys more effective, more efficient and reduces the amount of unbillable hours they spend on research.

A couple of months later I launched the Securities Practice Center, a similar solution for securities lawyers.

Insight is everything

Insight_sm

I conceived of Nelson Information's Industry Insight solution to meet the needs of the institutional investment community to understand cash flows into and out of institutional investment portfolios. Insight was the first solution to reveal cash flows in over $11 trillion of institutional assets at the portfolio, management company and asset class level. This innovative web-based application leveraged existing content, gave Nelson's clients a new view of market activity, and allowed managers and consulting firms to gain competitive advantage and win new customers.

The transformation of Nelson into a provider of web-based information solutions (see below), with the launches of Insight and MarketPlaceWeb, was accomplished with teams in multiple geographic locations who had all faced and were facing corporate transitions. They were energized and motivated by a vision of success for the business, by their roles in achieving that success, and by the reception we received in the market.

Identify, Qualify, Transform

IQT

I led the transformation of Nelson Information from software publisher to provider of a web-based platform that allowed Nelson to aggregate, integrate and syndicate global content and applications. The launch of MarketPlaceWeb was a major milestone in that process. An internet version of Nelson's flagship Institutional MarketPlace software, MarketPlaceWeb replaced the locally installed application. It provided anywhere-in-the-world access to the entire application including the most up-to-date content as well as shared and saved searches.

For the first time the MarketPlace database functioned as a service, delivering feeds and retrieval of content through third-party applications. MarketPlaceWeb also integrated external web applications directly into the platform, including delivery of the first performance-based style analysis on the web, which was of course driven by Nelson's data.

Retirement Planning Solutions

Architeck_sm

Architec(k) was one of the first web-based 401(k) planning solutions. The concept began with a custom solutions developer acquired by Wiesenberger, which became its Retirement Products Division. I turned the division into a provider of customizable, private labeled, web-based applications that delivered investment advice and actionable information, and enabled investment decisions for millions of 401(k) plan participants.

DirectAds

DirectAds2

DirectAds was an early development of my concept for behavioral targeting in a financial planning setting. It was a feature in Architec(k) that dynamically delivered content based on user interaction and information stored about the user during the retirement planning process. DirectAds allowed financial services companies to create a personalized experience for each investor, provide targeted educational information and expose the investor to relevant investment options.

Solving Mutual Fund Shares

MCC

The Multiple Class Calculator is a compliance software program I developed that allowed brokers to comply with what were then new NASD requirements to recommend not only the best mutual fund for any investor but also the best share class of that fund. Multiple share classes of mutual funds were still a relatively new concept and the Multiple Class Calculator was the first software program to help brokers recommend, and investors select, the most efficient share class of any mutual fund.

The software was licensed to broker/dealers, banks and individual financial planners. It received attention in the national press including Barron's, BusinessWeek, The New York Times, Financial Planning, SmartMoney Magazine and the Washington Post, and led me to a career change, moving from the financial services industry into software and information services.
